Printing a family tree chart to Adobe PDF

One of the benefits of using the Tree Charts facility is being able to output your family tree chart to different sized paper.

You are not limited by the selection your printer supports. Your printer undoubtably supports A4 or Letter sized paper. You may even have access to a printer that can output to the larger size A3 paper. But what about paper sizes your printer does not support? This is where the benefits of printing to Adobe PDF come to the fore.

How to print to a PDF printer

To do this

Go to menu File > Print.

Look at the selection of Printers. Is a PDF printer listed?

If one is then select it.

If one is not then you will need to install one.

Such a PDF printer that works well is 'CutePDF Writer'. You can obtain this free printer from Follow the instructions at that site on how to download and install the program. There are other PDF printers available from other vendors that might work equally as well.

How to choose the page size

At this stage you will have selected your PDF printer.

You now have to choose the page size that you require.

Go to menu File > Page Setup.

Under 'Paper size' you should now see a greater range of paper sizes. If your regular printer outputs to A4 or Letter then you would have seen a small list. Now you will probably see A3 (which is a larger paper size) and A0 (a paper size 84.1 cm by 118.9 cm).

Choose A0.

Go to menu File > Print.

Ensure that CutePDF Writer is still the chosen printer. Click OK.

You will be prompted to specify a file name for the chart. Type

Click the Save button.

Some paper page sizes mentioned
Page Name Paper Size
A4 210 x 297 mm
Letter 215.9 x 279.4 mm
A3 297 x 420 mm
A0 841 x 1189 mm
B0 1000 x 1414 mm

Just open the previously saved file then change the page size as before.

Go to menu File > Open diagram.

Compared with other programs the family history program GENP makes it straightforward to change the page size of a family tree chart.

How to get the family tree output file to a professional printer

Locate the file you just output and copy it so you can take the file to a professional printer.

You can usually take the file on a memory stick (USB stick) or burn the file to a CD.

By this means family tree charts from the family history program GENP can be printed by a professional printer.
