Tree Charts - panel Select

The Select tool panel allows you to select people in the chart that meet various criteria. You may then output the selected people to a list.

There are thirteen (13) selection buttons, each of which selects people based on certain criteria.

The buttons are in three groups. The first group is of specific criteria, such as a person and his descendants. The second group deals with all people in the chart. The third and last group handles inversion of previous selections.

Generally speaking you need to select one individual in the chart before clicking on one of the selection buttons.

Group 1 - Specific criteria

There are ten buttons in this group.

Button 'Person and ancestors'

Clicking this button selects the ancestors of the selected person.

For example, the selected person's father, mother and grand parents.

For Hourglass Charts: The selection does not cross over the focus individual and any spouses.

Button 'Person and male line ancestors'

Clicking this button selects the male line ancestors of the selected person.

For example, the selected person's father, grandfather and great grandfather.

For Hourglass Charts: The selection does not cross over the focus individual and any spouses.

Button 'Person and female line ancestors'

Clicking this button selects the female line ancestors of the selected person. For example, the selected person's mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

For Hourglass Charts: The selection does not cross over the focus individual and any spouses.

Button 'Person and descendants'

Clicking this button selects the descendants of the selected person.

For example, the selected person's children and grand children.

For Descendant Charts: For layouts 'Descendant with spouse' and 'Do not show spouses' the person is considered to be the couple.

Button 'Generation'

Clicking this button selects everyone of the same generation.

For example, if the selected person was a grandparent then all the grandparents would be selected.

For Hourglass Charts: Will select the generation of either the ancestor or descendant. For example, select a person who is an ancestor. Assume this person is generation two. Only people of the same generation who are ancestors are selected. Thus descendants at generation two are not selected.

Button 'Generation and ancestors'

Clicking this button selects everyone of the same generation and the ancestors of each of those.

For example, if the selected person was a grandparent then all the grandparents would be selected. Then each of those grandparent's ancestors. This means the great grandparents of the selected person and great-great grandparents etc of the selected person.

For Hourglass Charts: The selection does not cross over the focus individual and any spouses.

Button 'Generation and descendants'

Clicking this button selects everyone of the same generation and the descendants of each of those.

For example, if the selected person was a grandparent then all the grandparents would be selected. Then each of those grandparent's descendants. This means the children and grand children etc.

For Hourglass Charts: The selection does not cross over the focus individual and any spouses.

Button 'Person and siblings'

Clicking this button selects the siblings of the selected person. This includes half brothers and sisters.

For Descendant Charts: For layout 'Descendant with spouse' if you have selected an individual at Generation 1 and that individual has multiple spouses, only that selected box will be selected.

Button 'Person, siblings and ancestors'

Clicking this button selects the siblings of the selected person and the ancestors of each of those.

For example, if the selected person has a half brother, and shares a father then the two mothers will be selected.

For Descendant Charts: For layout 'Descendant with spouse' if you have selected a child whose parent had a number of unions, only the box of the union of that child will be selected. The boxes of the other unions will not be selected. If you want those other unions selected, you need to do that selection manually.

For Hourglass Charts: The selection does not cross over the focus individual and any spouses.

Button 'Person, siblings and descendants'

Clicking this button selects the siblings of the selected person and the descendants of each of those.

For Hourglass Charts: The selection does not cross over the focus individual and any spouses.

Group 2 - All people

There are two buttons in this group.

Button 'All'

Clicking this button selects all the people in the chart. All people are selected regardless of the number of people that are currently selected.

For example, selection of one person then clicking this button results in all people in the chart being selected. For example, selection of two people then clicking this button results in all people in the chart being selected.

Button 'All except this Person'

Clicking this button selects all the people in the chart except this person. Thought of another way it selects everyone in the chart then deselects the initial selected person.

For Descendant Charts: if the selected person is one of multiple marriages then all marriages of this person are not selected.

Group 3 - Inversion

There is one button in this group.

Button 'Invert selection'

Clicking this button inverts the selection.

For example, one person is selected, then the button is clicked. The result is that everyone except this person is selected. For example, three people are selected, then the button is clicked. The result is that everyone except these three people are selected.
